Describes one of three excavations in the area. Negative features were located, with almost no stratigraphy present. Dere Street could be discerned only as a concentration of small stones embedded in the surface of the boulder clay. An enclosure and burials were also observed. The burials probably represent part of the earliest northern cemetery of the fort at Corbridge and, with the exception of one apparently Gallic individual, they were not of high status. Finds reports include details of coins and copper alloy objects, followed by: `The Roman glass' by J Price & S Cottam (25--9); `The pottery' by J N Dore (29--43), including a contribution on some of the samian by Brenda Dickinson (40--1); and `The animal bones' by James Rackham (43--4).

Reports recent archaeological work which has produced a considerable amount of new evidence for the monastic occupation of Hexham. The results of these excavations -- in 1984, 1990, and 1993 -- are described in part one of the report. Part two assesses the wider implications of this work. The evidence for the AS monastic complex, the twelfth-century Augustinian refoundation, and the establishment of the existing layout are reconsidered. The associated development of Hexham as a settlement is discussed. Glyn Goodrick & Alan Williams report `Investigations to the south-east and east of the priory church in 1993' (63--72). The major fourteenth-century additions to the church of St Andrew are placed in context in the `Introduction' by Peter Ryder (94), `The eastern chapels' by Nicola Coldstream (95--9), and `The sacristy/chapel' by Peter Ryder (99--100). The creation and development of the AS and later monastic cemeteries are described along with comments on the post-Dissolution developments at the eastern end of the priory site. Part three of the report contains specialist contributions on finds from the investigations and other associated artefacts hitherto unrecorded: the `Anglo-Saxon cross-arm' is described by Eric Cambridge (108--12) and a `Cross-shaft fragment' by Richard N Bailey (112--13); Adam Welfare describes a `Milling stone' (113--14); and Peter Ryder catalogues the surviving medieval grave-slabs and other sepulchral monuments along with a bench table from the eastern chapels in `Grave slabs from the canons' cemetery' (115--19) and `Cross slabs and other medieval sepulchral monuments' (120--6). Mike Trueman & Alan Williams describe the `Lead' objects (126--7), Susan Mills the `Medieval (post-Conquest)' pottery (127--9), and R I Macleod the `Human skeletal remains' (129--30).

Reports excavation work undertaken to examine the development of this section of the medieval waterfront. It confirmed that a broad artificial platform over fifty metres wide had been created at the base of a steep river cliff through reclamation behind a sequence of successive stone waterfronts. Activity from the thirteenth to nineteenth centuries is detailed including the construction and enlargement of an L-shaped building during the fourteenth century, the construction of a new waterfront in the fifteenth century, and seventeenth-century redevelopment culminating in the construction of the Mansion House of the Corporation of Newcastle. The Mansion House was destroyed by fire in the late nineteenth century. There are details of: the pottery (thirteenth--eighteenth centuries); clay pipes; decorative plaster work; brick; floor tile; stone objects; `Coins' by R J Brickstock (188); copper alloy objects; lead and pewter; iron; and miscellaneous objects including leather fragments and a bone needle. Mostly historical account of the medieval castle's post-medieval development and demise.

Mostly historical account of the estate's development including details of the rebuilding of the house, concomitant work on the garden, woodland and orchard planting, changes in the estate layout, and the park design. Nineteenth-century developments are also reported.

Reports a large secondary flake implement found during the course of fieldwalking in the Eltringham area.

Reports observations which add to knowledge of the Roman cemetery excavated in 1993. A cremation was found with associated BBII fragments. The pottery is briefly detailed in `Finds' by Alexandra Croom (314) and the `Human remains' noted by Joy Langston (314)
