Reports excavations in advance of the construction of a by-pass that went on to destroy 130m of the Wall and c. 50m of the Vallum. Pre-Wall activity, the Wall itself (including the collapse of the south face and reconstruction of the elevation), deposits north of the Wall in trench C, decay and robbing of the Wall, and the Wall ditch are all detailed. The vallum ditch, and north and south mounds are discussed. There is an appendix `Soil analysis' by R Payton (41--52) which includes `Other finds' by A Croom (48--50), `Coin' by R Brickstock (50), `Silver hand pin fragment' by C Batey (51--2). Also, `Report on the analysis of the silver hand pin fragment' by P Clogg (53) and `Mortar analyses' by G C Morgan (53--4).

Archaeological evidence includes long cist burials, inscriptions, sub-Roman ditches round one or possibly all of the Yorkshire signal stations, along with artefactual data. Palynological evidence indicates a reversion to woodland after a reduction in agricultural activity. An appendix details vegetational changes c. 400AD shown in pollen sequences from sites close to Hadrian's Wall (69--70).

Reports a circular stone structure, exposed by storms in the late 1980s and excavated in 1994. The structure, associated with other more enigmatic features, was diagnosed as a substantial stone-lined lime kiln, the last firing of which was archaeomagnetically dated to the late-fifteenth to early-sixteenth century.
