Our Director, Julian Richards, has been nominated for ‘Archaeologist of the Year’!
The ADS are thrilled that Julian has been recognised and as such wanted to share some of his achievements that have led to this honour.
As a Professor at the University of York Julian published numerous books and articles on Anglo-Saxon and Viking archaeology. Some University achievements include Head of Department from 2006-12, being the founding Director of York’s Centre for Digital Heritage, and from 2013-2019 he was the founding Director of The White Rose College of the Arts and Humanities (WRoCAH).
Whilst these alone make an impressive resume, his greatest impact has been through his pioneering work making archaeology data archives freely accessible online for generations to come.
After leading the consortium of UK stakeholders that founded the ADS in 1996, Julian has served as the Director of the Archaeology Data Service. He also co-founded one of the world’s first Open Access online journals, Internet Archaeology. In that time Julian has contributed significantly to pioneering digital data preservation and has led the ADS to become world leaders in this sphere. This led to Julian being awarded an OBE in the 2024 New Year honours list for his work in Heritage and Digital Archiving. Lastly, just this year Julian is also leading a major AHRC-funded initiative to build a Heritage Science Data Service which aims to unlock potential for innovation in heritage science.
