New Collections in the ADS Library

The ADS is excited to announce the release of a number of new journal collections into the ADS Library over the last year. Each of these new library collections is available open access for all to download and read free of charge. Read below for more details of these new collections.

Medieval Ceramics

Medieval Ceramics is the Journal of the Medieval Ceramics Research Group, which studies pottery vessels that were made, traded, and used in Europe and beyond between the end of the Roman period and the 19th century. The ADS Library now holds all 41 volumes of the journal published between 1977 to 2020. 

The Leicestershire Historian

The Leicestershire Historian describes the heritage and history of the county of Leicestershire. First appearing as the annual publication of the Leicestershire Local History Council, the Leicestershire Archaeological and Historical Society took over its publication when that body ceased to exist in 1995. The Library now holds all 58 volumes of the journal, running from 1967 to 2022.

Bedfordshire Archaeology

Bedfordshire Archaeology details archaeological discoveries and investigations undertaken within the county. Originally published by the Bedfordshire Archaeological Council, it is now administered by CBA South Midlands since that organisation’s demise. The ADS Library now holds 27 volumes of this journal dating from 1962 to 2017. In addition to this journal, the ADS library also holds six volumes of the Bedfordshire Archaeology Monograph Series, which includes the Bedfordshire Archaeology Research Framework published back in 2007. 

Transactions of the Thoroton Society: The Journal for Nottinghamshire History and Archaeology

The Transactions of the Thoroton Society is published by The Thoroton Society of Nottinghamshire, “the county’s principal historical and archaeological society”.  Founded in 1897, the society and journal was named after Dr Robert Thoroton who published the first history of the county in 1677. The ADS Library holds volumes 1 to 124 of this journal dating from 1897 to 2021.

Records of Buckinghamshire

This collection comprises volumes of the Records of Buckinghamshire, a journal published annually since 1854 by the Buckinghamshire Archaeological Society. The journal covers the full range of the county’s local history and archaeology. The ADS now holds 170 volumes of the journal dating from 1854 to 2023.

In addition to these new collections the ADS has also completed updates to a number of other collections that represent a wide array of different journal types. A list of some of these updates is listed below:

Medieval Settlement Research Group Publication

The Medieval Settlement Research Group (MSRG) is a multi-disciplinary organisation dedicated to developing understanding of settlement between the fifth and sixteenth centuries AD. This publication contains articles, fieldwork reports, reviews and an annual bibliography from sites across Britain and Europe.

The Proceedings of the Cambridge Antiquarian Society (PCAS)

The Cambridge Antiquarian Society, founded in 1840, publishes this annual journal of  articles and other items on a variety of topics for people with an interest in the history and archaeology of Cambridgeshire.

Transactions of the Leicestershire Archaeology and Historical Society

As published by the Leicestershire Archaeological and Historical Society, this journal collection promotes ‘the study of history, archaeology, antiquities and architecture of the counties of Leicestershire and Rutland’.

Surrey Archaeological Collections

The journal of the Surrey Archaeological Society, this collection contains articles and reviews of volumes pertaining to the the study of the archaeology and history of the county of Surrey.

London Archaeologist

A long running collection within the ADS LIbrary, several new volumes have been added to the London Archaeologist, a quarterly publication of research and excavation reports; interviews; finds, artefact, and bioarchaeology studies. This collection now includes volume 16(7) and 16(8), both of which were published in 2022.
