[NY 9765] The Flavian bath-house at Red House had been assumed to belong to the earliest fort at Corbridge; but evidence found in 1973 ruled out an Agricolan foundation for Corbridge. Fieldwork to locate the Agricolan base suggested a likely site at Red House, and excavation in advance of roadworks indicated the presence of a half-legionary or vexillation fortress of ?8-9ha. A barrack block, ?store buildings, fabrica, extra-mural traces etc are planned and described, and pottery and small finds catalogued (together with Meso-Neo flintwork).

NY 912699. The discovery, at Chesters, of an altar dedicated to the Discipline of the Emperor Hadrian provides the earliest epigraphic evidence for the goddess. As dedications to Disciplina were usually placed in the headquarters building there is a strong presumption that the unit mentioned on the inscription, ala Augusta ob virtutem appellata, was the original garrison of Chesters. It seems probable that this unit should not be equated with the ala Gallorum Proculeiana, as has hitherto been supposed. Authors

NY 935640. Excavations over the eastern part of the 7th century crypt revealed an E-W wall which bridged the southerly leg of the S passage and was contemporary with it; the passage thus emerged outside the main body of the church. The new wall, later incorporated into medieval paving and the screen platform, was set on foundation 'j' of earlier accounts. The crypt was built in a large hole, whose eastern edge lies below the present crossing, and was backfilled against the rising walls. The eastern end of the main chamber was protected and supported by massive mortared buttressing. Au(adp)
